Pediatric hygiene education teaches children and parents how to care for growing smiles at home. It includes age-appropriate guidance on brushing, flossing, fluoride toothpaste, food choices, and daily habits that can help reduce plaque buildup and the risk of cavities.
At &Smiles Pediatric Dentistry, we personalize every hygiene lesson based on your child’s age, coordination, current habits, and oral health needs. Parents also receive practical advice for assisting younger children and encouraging older children to become more independent without sacrificing effective cleaning.

Our board-certified pediatric dentists and child-focused team make oral hygiene education easy to understand and apply at home. We focus on realistic, personalized guidance rather than giving every family the same routine.
1
Parent-Friendly Support
Parents receive clear guidance on toothpaste amounts, brushing assistance, flossing, snacks, and creating a consistent home routine.
2
Personalized Cavity Prevention
We identify areas that need more attention and recommend practical changes based on your child’s plaque buildup, cavity risk, diet, and current habits.
3
Hands-On Learning
Our team demonstrates proper cleaning techniques and helps children practice in a supportive setting where they can ask questions.
4
Age-Appropriate Guidance
We adapt brushing, flossing, and oral care instructions to your child’s age, development, coordination, and ability to participate.
We begin by discussing your child’s brushing and flossing routine, food and drink choices, dental history, and any difficulties your family experiences at home.
Our team shows your child how to brush every tooth surface and clean between the teeth. We use clear, child-friendly explanations and adjust the lesson to their age and learning style.
We recommend an achievable daily routine, demonstrate the appropriate amount of toothpaste, and explain where your child may still need help or supervision.
Good home care can lower cavity risk when combined with regular dental visits, fluoride exposure, and balanced food and drink habits. Because every child has different risk factors, our team provides recommendations based on their individual needs.
Children should generally brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Young children should be assisted or supervised to ensure all tooth surfaces are cleaned and excess toothpaste is not swallowed.
Flossing should begin when neighboring teeth touch and the areas between them can no longer be cleaned effectively with a toothbrush alone. Parents may need to floss for younger children until they develop adequate coordination.
Children younger than three should use a smear or rice-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Children ages three to six should use a pea-sized amount and brush with adult assistance or supervision.
Begin brushing as soon as the first tooth appears. Use a soft, age-appropriate toothbrush and a small amount of fluoride toothpaste.

Dr Garces, Adela and Samantha were sooo inviting, professional and warm. They welcomed my daughter in and made her feel at home. Dr. Garces literally explained in detail all procedures that were going to take place and put me at ease.
